I suck on Lifesavers like it's nobody's business-but am now paying the price...sugar on my teeth is no bueno. I have to switch things up pretty quick here- so what do you do instead-if anything?

They have zero calories, allow one to suck in air, take care of the hand to mouth issue and are not addictive at all. That's what I used after the first days. It was an idea I got from Dale jonescarp.aka.dale.Jan_2007. I was trying to think of something and I made a comment and he replied with "why don't you just smoke air." So I took his advice and did smoke air right through a straw! And after I was safe from my addiction, it was really easy to quit the straws.

You really made my quit easier with that one line. I actually cut them in half, put them in a plastic bag and carried them around in my shirt pocket, where I used to keep my cigarettes. I could chew on both sides before discarding them, but I will say the ash tray in the jeep I had at the time looked pretty weird for awhile.
Keep a bottle of cold water to sip from with you at all times. You can make your own flavored toothpicks with orange juice, tabasco, root beer, wine, etc., etc. You soak them, then lay on a tray to dry.
